In response to newly passed SOPA bill recently passed by the US congress designed to protect copyrighted material the site is planning a 24 hour staged blackout of the site. Many feel that this bill allows the US the power to crush free speech on the web while using the excuse of copyright protection. It has been causing much concern around the web but little in congress where it was was voted in a by a large majority.

While it all started in Alex Jones and conspiracy theory land it has worked its way up to the heights of major web companies including even Facebook.

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.

Tell Congress not to censor the internet NOW! – http://www.fightforthefuture.org/pipa

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites– they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.”

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that’s for a fix that won’t work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.

GOP Candidate Ron Paul makes a lot of sense in his words. This is an old video now, but a great example where he goes head to head with Ricky Santurum, who surprisingly managed to gain 10% out of nowhere on the 15% he was polling at and beat Ron Paul in the Iowa vote in January 2012. I mean most of the GOP candidates are going to be a free pass for Obama to get reelected. I can’t help but listen to the boos and hisses coming from the crowd on some of the most valid points made by any Republican in all the time I have watched American politics. Does make you wonder about what the voters themselves are really after other than low taxes and less government. I mean this guy is really impressive to me. BTW Ron Paul is the older guy on the right.

This is Ron Paul in Iowa in 2011:

Hmmmmmmmmmm do his point really sound super radical to you?!! I simply do not get it at all.

J Live is one of my favourite Hip Hop artist who still remains one of Americas most talented and totally unrecognised rap artists. I found this guy on soundcloud who has basically taken J Live acapellas and reworked them. They sound wicked!

He also has some Jay Z tracks too check him out:

Black Star are finally making a return after many years. The duo consisting of Mos Def and Talib Kwali have released a sneak preview of their new material. This trck called Already Knew is my favourite of the two.

New compilation on the way from Stonesthrow Records. This sounds great. Will be interested to see how the rest of electronic mashoup pans out:

A few months back I went to the premier of the film the Economics of Happiness. It is a film that explores the impact of our current way of living on us humans and our world. It encourages and formulates the notion of localisation practice amongst individuals, encouraging us to support our local communities and work towards a healthier environment. It is not a totally new concept at all and one I feel has been bubbling slowly for a while and I feel is set to explode among the few remaining affluent middle classes who frequent farmers markets and buy organic veg currently. What the film does do is put localisation into context of how it can help both us as people, where we live and our local business ecosytem. It was an interesting film that has inspired some business ideas based around localisation of my own.

Here is the trailer which you can watch and a link to the films web site below:

http://www.theeconomicsofhappiness.org/

It was an interesting premier with some highly academic folk attending. Often scratching their beards if they were men and looking down their pointy glasses if they were females. However unlike before when I would have visioned them to be owners of huge gas guzzling 4×4 Range Rovers they took to the Tescos hypermarket for bread and milk; I imagined them now in a totally different way. Here they were at an event concerned about their communities and thus the environment we seem to be destroying recklessly, me included.

I spoke to one such aristocrat next to me who had paid £55,000 of his own money to install a wind turbine in his own village. Then there was another guy next to him running a transition town in Norfolk. Both highly rich with more money than they knew what to do with but worried about their future existence on the planet just as I have become.

I became inspired and transfixed by everyone. Gone were the crusties, famous for failing university courses so they could extend their student life style and gate crash a demonstration somewhere and here was a totally different side of britain completely concerned by what was going on around them.

If you get a chance try to watch this. I actually bought this on DVD at the premier. I then did an experiment. Out of ten selected people I offered to give this to to watch only 1 person watched it and she was the person who actually told me about it in the first place. The world is great while it works for us hey. :)
